Grand Opening of the new Buxton Center for Bainbridge Performing Arts set for September 30th September 22, 2023 Posted in: Bainbridge Island, Bainbridge Island, DestinationBainbridgeIsland, Events, Living on B.I., People, Arts, Culture, Music, Food and Wine, Visit Bainbridge, Visiting B.I. - Back in the 1960s and 1970s, Frank Buxton was a well-known Hollywood writer and director, who oversaw many episodes of some of television's more iconic sitcoms, such as The Odd Couple, Mork & Mindy and Happy Days. Buxton, who is now deceased, and his wife, Cynthia Sears, eventually migrated north to Bainbridge Island in the late 1980s and took the then fledgling Bainbridge Performing Arts program under their wing. To thank him and his wife for their many contributions to the local art scene, backers of BPA are renaming the playhouse—after nearly $20 million in renovations—The Buxton Center for Bainbridge Performing Arts. Buxton helped start up, and perform in, the island's Edge Comedy Troupe way back when, and would probably be laughing out loud at the prospect of a building being named after him, a la Groucho Marx, who famously groused that he would never be a member of a club that would have him as a member. But local residents are cordially invited to both laugh with and celebrate Buxton's memory at the grand unveiling of BPA's newly-renovated facility on Saturday, September 30th at… Continue Reading

Relaunched Music Together Center Helps Young Children and Parents Bond through Music and Movement September 18, 2023 Posted in: Bainbridge Island, Bainbridge Island, Events, Living on B.I., People, Arts, Culture, Music, Food and Wine - Like a lot of businesses and organizations, the Pandemic threw Tacie O'Sheehan and her Music Together Center for a bit of a loop three years ago - sidetracking its momentum until just recently. She's now about to relaunch the early childhood music and movement program later this month at Grace Church. "Someone previously had a Music Together Center here on the island," O'Sheehan recalls, "and a few months before the pandemic, she had asked me to take it over for her because she was moving. I moved out here (from the Midwest) to do just that, but everything fell through with the arrival of Covid. It's taken me some time to get things going again as I've had to start from the ground up now, but I'm excited to share Music Together with (Island) families here." O'Sheehan is originally from Wisconsin, and has been working both internationally and domestically in anti-trafficking with children of all ages, while also playing guitar, violin, piano and ukulele both in her work, as well as in her community for fun. Her background is in child/human development, trauma sensitive mental… Continue Reading
