Come and view 10 engrossing short films from around the world at the Film Festival – now in its 26th year – Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 29th, 30th and October 1st at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Showtimes are 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day.

Movie Maven Tj Faddis 2022“Many past shorts have been considered for Academy Awards,” says local Manhattan short organizer and self-proclaimed Movie Maven TJ Faddis. “Several have even won that coveted prize. But this isn’t entirely a passive viewing, as you will vote for your favorite short and actor.”

“As anyone who has been to this event knows, this is one hot ticket,” Faddis adds, with the enthusiasm of a huge fan. “So be sure to get yours in advance here as matinees generally sell out:

“You can read more about this year’s selections and view the trailer here too.”

Tickets are $12 for BIMA members; $15 for those who are not yet members. All six showings feature the same 10 short films.  The program is about 2-1/2 hours, including intermission and time to fill out your ballot.

A word to wise from Faddis, “If you are planning dinner after the matinee, don’t make reservations before 6.”

You will be given a brochure and voting card when you enter the theatre, so you can vote for your favorite actor and favorite film. “All 10 filmmakers will have their short reviewed by the Academy Award Committee with the possibility of having their film in the running for an Oscar in 2024,” Faddis says.

“You only get to vote for one favorite film,” she explains. “While there are always several films worthy, you have to wrestle with yourself as to which one will get your vote. We have many attendees who come for the matinee with friends, then head out to dinner together and spend the rest of the evening talking about how they voted and what they saw and experienced at the Manhattan Short(s).”

This year there are 10 Manhattan Short finalists hailing from seven countries.  The final 10 represent the best short films from among all the entries received this year for consideration.

Manhattan Short Poster 2023“This year’s collection is a tight two-plus hour program, featuring inventive storytelling… terrific acting… polished filmmaking… and in one short, brilliant animation,” Faddis explains. “Expect suspense and surprise and gentle smiles as these films spin some heart-felt stories about human connection. There is something to admire about each of these selections.”

Adds Faddis, “I love hosting (the) Manhattan Short(s), and have been doing it for 23 years. It’s better than Christmas…Everyone comes in with bright-eyed anticipation, knowing there are 10 gift-wrapped shorts waiting to unfold before (their) eyes. Will we gasp, laugh, cry, or stay silent as we process that last short? It’s a 2-1/2-hour emotional roller coaster of human connection – and I can’t wait to share it with this year’s audiences!”

The festival is hosted by BIMA and includes an extended intermission, where viewers can grab nibbles at the BIMA Bistro, or purchase beer/wine and other beverages and take them into the auditorium to sip as you watch the shows.
