BHS Jazz Bands to Present ‘Jazz Outdoors’ Concert in Downtown Winslow Tomorrow Night; City Ponders Affordable Housing at Former Police Station Site
The award-winning Bainbridge High School Jazz Collective invites the community to enjoy an evening of exceptional music at their upcoming free outdoor concert on Thursday, June 5.
From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the talented student musicians of Jazz9, Jazz 1, and Jazz 2 ensembles will transform the Madrone Lane Public Seating Area adjacent to Blackbird Bakery into a vibrant jazz venue for this special end-of-year performance.
“The Jazz Outdoors concert is our way of giving back to the community that has supported our music programs throughout the year,” says Chris Thomas, Director of Bands at Bainbridge High School. “We’re excited to share the students’ hard work and musical growth in an informal outdoor setting.”
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Community members are encouraged to grab dinner from one of Winslow’s many restaurants and eateries before settling in to enjoy the evening of live jazz performed by the island’s talented young musicians. City Discusses Affordable Housing Options at site of Former Police Station

This past week, the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) hosted a community listening session at the Bainbridge Performing Arts Center to share early plans and gather input on its proposed affordable housing development at 625 Winslow Way E., where the old Bainbridge Island Police Station was located.
The mixed-use project will feature approximately 90 units of workforce and family housing, including a mix of studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, along with street-level live/work units and 3,200 square feet of commercial or community space.
More than housing, LIHI envisions a place that reflects the truly unique character of Bainbridge Island, city officials say. The design team shared ideas for integrating trees, art, and public seating to create welcoming pedestrian spaces along the triangular edges of the site. Viewpoints, gathering spots, and beautiful, meaningful design elements are being prioritized to ensure the project becomes a vibrant community asset.
LIHI Executive Director Sharon Lee emphasized the group’s intent: “We want this to be a true community asset.” Bainbridge High School alum and LIHI Chief Strategy Officer Jon Grant spoke to his personal connection to the island and the importance of honoring its identity through thoughtful design.
The project is steps from the ferry terminal, BIMA, and the Downtown Winslow core—with high walking and biking scores—and aims to enhance, not just add to, the heart of downtown. Stay tuned for future updates.
