Library U’s 2025 Fall Humanities Speaker Series, co-sponsored with the Bainbridge Public Library, the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, and Humanities Washington, concludes with its final presentation on Sunday, November 23, from 1 – 2:30 p.m. in the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center. The program is free and open to the public.

The topic is: Un-American Activities: The Blacklist Era and Hollywood. A Humanities Washington presentation by film critic and historian Robert Horton. “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” The answer to this question—or the refusal to answer it—cast hundreds of lives into turmoil at the dawn of the Cold War. The Red Scare that erupted in the 1940s allowed the House Committee on Un-American Activities to grab headlines by parading prominent Hollywood figures before the cameras. This presentation, illustrated with film clips, tells the stories from this heartbreaking and scandalous era, and how notables such as Humphrey Bogart, Elia Kazan, and Charlie Chaplin were swept up in the frenzy. We’ll also ask a question: with today’s politics at a boiling point, are we living in such a period again?

Library U is sponsored by the Bainbridge Public Library with support from the Bainbridge Island Friends of the Library, a generous donation in memory of Louise Brody Weissman, a grant from the Bainbridge Community Foundation, and support from Humanities Washington, a statewide nonprofit whose mission is to open minds and bridges that divide us by creating spaces to explore different perspectives.

Cars for a Cool Cause! BI Senior Center Launches New Vehicle Donation Program

The Bainbridge Island Senior & Community Center has teamed upwith CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services) to offer a vehicle donation program to the community.

The Bainbridge Island Senior & Community Center has launched a partnership with CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services) to offer supporters a new and meaningful way to contribute to the Center’s mission: a fun, safe, inspiring and engaging place where everyone is welcome.
Bainbridge Island Senior/Community Center“It’s our understanding that BISCC is the first nonprofit on Bainbridge Island to provide such a service,” notes the center’s Executive Director Reed Price. “Dollars raised from donated vehicles or boats will help the Center run its day-to-day operation and hold dozens of classes, workshops, hands-on experiences, club meetings, field trips, and more.” BISCC is also a community information hub and a city-designated resiliency center in times of emergency. Why participate in the program:
  • Donating to BISCC skips the costs and hassles associated with selling a car, truck, RV, boat, etc., like paying for advertising and insurance, or for repairs needed to sell the vehicle, or while owners wait for a buyer.
  • Donors will avoid the costs associated with keeping a car, such as registration, insurance, car repairs, and more.
  • Doing so, can free up space at home and/or stop paying for extra parking/moorage.
  • Vehicle donations are tax-deductible.
CARS guides donors throughout the entire donation process and provides a free and convenient pick-up. Many nonprofits across the U.S. rely greatly on their vehicle donation program as a stable source of funds. CARS is the largest nonprofit vehicle donation provider and a trusted partner to more than 3,500 other nonprofits in North America. CARS also provides transportation independence to thousands of seniors in the San Diego community by operating a free shuttle program called On the Go.
