Cedars UU Church Invites the Community to a Winter Solstice Celebration: Winter Stillness & Emerging Light
As the days grow shorter and the nights reach their deepest quiet, many Islanders look for moments of reflection amid the rush of the season. Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church is offering just such a gathering with its annual Winter Solstice Service, “Winter Stillness & Emerging Light,” on December 21 at 4 p.m. at The Island School on Day Road.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
This family-friendly event weaves together music, readings, and quiet moments to honor the solstice—the turning point in the year when the longest night gives way, slowly, to the return of the sun. Cedars describes the service as “a time of both mystery and expectancy,” inviting attendees to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the deeper rhythms of the season.
Rooted in ancient traditions yet oriented toward the present, the solstice service reflects Cedars UU’s emphasis on spiritual openness, community connection, and environmental reverence. Childcare will be available, making the event accessible for families looking to share a gentle, meaningful seasonal ritual.
Those who wish to continue the celebration of light are also welcome at Cedars’ Christmas Eve Service on December 24 at 5 p.m. at The Island School on Day Road.
The Winter Solstice gathering is open to all—longtime Islanders, newcomers, and curious visitors alike. For more information, scan the QR code on the flyer or visit cedarsuuchurch.org to find out more information.

Don’t miss your last chance to see The Hunchback of Notre Dame at BPA before the story comes to an end this Sunday.
Based on the Victor Hugo novel and featuring the soaring music of Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast), this epic musical – The Hunchback of Notre Dame – tells the powerful story of Quasimodo, the bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral. Staged at Bainbridge Performing Arts, Dec. 5-21.
There are some themes that parents or guardians may decide are not suited for younger children.
Those themes include the following:
- Religious themes and brief on-stage references to sin, damnation, and church authority
- Romantic tension, including moments of unwanted physical attention and discussion of lust
- Violence and peril, including depictions of mob action, attempted assault, and implied death by fire
- Use of stage fog/haze, loud sound effects, and flashing lights
- BPA strives to present a broad array of productions with many kinds of messages and staying true to the stories we present. However, we also believe in ensuring our patrons feel informed and comfortable when attending our events.
