Artist Wendy Brown Debuts Colorful ‘Collage as Life’ Exhibit at the Library

Bainbridge Island - First Friday Art Walk
A Wendy Brown Collage

“June gloom” has no meaning for our June artist, Wendy Brown, who will host an opening reception for her colorful “Collage as Life” exhibition June 5, 5-7PM in the Bainbridge Library meeting room during First Friday Art Walk.

Collage:  a kind of surrealist art in which bits of flat objects such as newspapers, bits of cloth, pressed flowers, etc. are pasted together in incongruous relationships for their symbolic or suggested effect. (Per the Oxford English Dictionary).

From Wendy Brown: “Just as memories are made up of disparate pieces, my collages reflect items close to the heart…photos, mementos, a cherished piece of ribbon, an old postcard, a button or bead in the hopes of resonating with a pleasant memory, a dear friend or relative or a significant event by the viewer.  Happy to do commissions centered on an item close to your heart…perfect for birthdays, anniversaries or YOU!”
You can view this exhibit all of June during regular library hours (unless a meeting is happening) A portion of sales is donated to the library. As always, thank you for supporting local artists and your Bainbridge Public Library – Linda Meier, art coordinator.

Bainbridge Island - Bainbridge Island First Friday Art WalkMeanwhile, Dan and Raya Friday take over the gallery at Bainbridge Arts & Crafts. The Lummi Nation siblings bring stunning, Coast Salish-inspired glass art to their contemporary yet traditional narratives.

From intricate woven glass baskets to bold, sculptural forms, witness how they have transformed ancestral storytelling into luminous, modern art. At BAC during First Friday Art Walk and throughout the month of June.

The Edge Improv is back on stage for a night of spontaneous comedy Saturday, June 6th at 7:30 p.m. at BPA

The Edge Improv has been making on-the-spot comedy in the Pacific Northwest for the last 30 years and is one of the longest-running improv groups in the world. Join them every first Saturday of the month for a night of randomized comedy that will “have you laughing all the way home”.

Leave the improvising to the professionals and buy your tickets in advance, the troupe suggests!

And don’t forget, this June you have two rare opportunities to see local improvisers shine! Tickets are available for both June 6th and June 27th!

Check out the new Helpline House Facility Sunday June 7th, 1-4  p.m.

For nearly 60 years, Helpline House has been here for Bainbridge Island — and now, its opening the doors to its new Building — “designed to better serve our community with food, support, and care for neighbors in need,” say officials. The community is invited to take a tour on Sunday, June 7th, from 1-4 p.m. The address:  282 Knechtel Way NE!

A Few Things to Know Before You Go:

  • You are invited to bring a non-perishable item to place on our new shelves as a “housewarming gift.”
  • The Ribbon Cutting ceremony will begin at 1:15, and we’ll open the doors thereafter.
  • Sweet treats and lemonade, provided by Fig and Spice, will be served.
  • You’ll be able to help with a summer pantry project in the Community Room.
  • You can take in a Helpline House “Chopped Challenge” demonstration featuring local Bainbridge Island chefs, creatively preparing food items you would typically find in our Food Bank.
  • Upstairs, we’ll have our “Passport to Partners,” where you can learn about the many ways our Social Services team collaborates with various community partners who will be on site. (Get a stamp when you visit each partner, and enter a completed passport for a chance to win a prize…)
  • You’ll also find kid-friendly activities like bracelet making and painting upstairs and sidewalk chalk for outdoor creativity, brought to you by our Helpline House Child Mental Healthcare staff.
  • Get a commemorative car magnet to show your support of Helpline House.
  • The first 400 guests (one per family, please) will receive a limited-edition Helpline House mini tote bag—great for carrying lunches or bringing some items (like condiments, which are always appreciated) back to Helpline House.
