Arts and Culture: Help Support BAC’s Survival with Art Purchases, Art at Library, First Friday Art Walk Tonight and All Day at OfficexPats
Generous art collectors from the Bainbridge community have donated works of art to Bainbridge Arts & Crafts for the Collectors’ Sale. Featuring painting, sculpture, glass, and ceramics. The show opens on First Friday, January 3, and runs through February 2. More than 30 local collectors have donated great works from beloved artists including Max Grover, Kim Murton, Gerard Tsutakawa, and Diana Cronin.
Founded in 1948, BAC is one of Bainbridge Island’s anchor arts organizations. Today, BAC supports more than 200 Northwest artists and serves thousands of kids, adults, and seniors every year through its scholarships, education programs, and classes. “Whether we taught your grandmother how to paint or featured your child’s art on our gallery walls, BAC has personally impacted thousands of community members,” says interim Executive Director Susan Jackson, who rejoined in December to steward the organization through its next phase of growth. “BAC is about to experience a renaissance—but first, we need our community’s support.”
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Former members of the board and staff from BAC have joined forces to build a plan that will ensure the organization’s long-term financial stability; deepen its curatorial commitment to stewarding the work of hundreds of regional artists; and strengthen its community arts programming, making art accessible for thousands of children nd adults through grants, scholarships, events, and education.
All purchases from The Collectors’ Show support Bainbridge Arts and Crafts. Community members can also support the organization by making a donation, becoming a member, or joining BAC as a volunteer.

Celebrate First Friday Art Walk with artist Sharon Johnson the Library

Bainbridge Library’s January artist, Sharon Johnson, will be hosting an opening reception for her exhibit titled “From Boston to Bainbridge Island” beginning tonight, at the First Friday Art Walk, January 3, 5-7 pm in the library meeting room. Here is Sharon’s description of her work:
Here’s her artist statement: “I am the daughter of a boatbuilder so perhaps heritage plays a role in my obsession to paint the ocean and the boats that sail on it. Many of us enjoy the lure of the sea for various reasons and I invite you to immerse yourself in my seaside vistas and dream. But everything is not the sea. In life at my cottage on Bainbridge Island, or in my paintings, there is a feeling of “hygge” that I hope to share with you in my paintings whether they be of the garden, a musical inspiration, a landscape, or a simple subject that has caught my attention.
“I prefer subjects with a story or ones that remind me that the world is still a beautiful place no matter what is going on in it, and I try to inspire the same with the paintings I create. A lifetime of learning, schooling, and mentors have been integral to the technical side of my art education, but nothing has been as important to me as learning to invoke a response from someone looking at my work and hearing, “I can see myself there” or “do you know what this reminds me of?” It is then that the conversation begins, stories and experiences are exchanged, and the painting comes to life. Perhaps each time it is viewed, the story changes and you wonder what might have been or what will be. There is a good feeling. Success.
