Battle Point Astronomical Assoc. to Celebrate the Installation of a New Rooftop Telescope on June 21st – Summer Solstice Day

After two years of rebuilding the observatory dome and shutter, and the installation of a new rooftop telescope, the Battle Point Astronomical Association (BPAA) Battle Point Astronomical Association – Igniting passion for science through the lens of astronomy is excited to announce a community open house on Saturday June 21st from 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m.
Formerly known as the Ritchie Observatory, this long-time astronomy hub will now be known as the Battle Point Observatory, a name that honors its location within Battle Point Park and strengthens its connection to the surrounding community, say BPAA members.
The June 21 open house will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m., guided tours ofthe Observatory, new cosmic themed murals painted by the observatory’s artist in residence, new planetarium shows, solar telescope viewing (weather permitting), interactive exhibits, and fun activities for all ages. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
“This is more than just a name change—it’s a new chapter,” notes Frank Petrie, President of the Battle Point Astronomical Association. “With our newly updated observatory and new rooftop telescope, we’re expanding our ability to engage the community with the wonders of the universe. We look forward to welcoming both longtime visitors and those discovering us for the first time.”

The Observatory is also taking steps to honor the legacy and vision of all three of its founders. The newly constructed telescope workroom will be named the Ritchie Workshop, recognizing Edwin E. Ritchie’s early contributions. The facility’s planetarium will continue as the Rudolf Planetarium, in tribute to founder John Rudolf. The renovated library and office space will now be known as the Gardiner Library, in honor of Mac Gardiner.
The June 21st event will showcase the investment of hundreds of volunteer hours, local grants and community donations to rebuild the rooftop dome and install a new state-of-the-art telescope. Now that this upgrade and remodel stage is wrapping up, the Observatory is committed to offering astronomy programs free to Kitsap K-12 schools, Petrie says. Newly hired Observatory staff for this endeavor will be on hand at the open house to share these ambitious plans.
For three decades, the Observatory has served the Bainbridge Island and surrounding community as a hub for astronomy education, public star parties, and outreach programs. This new name recognizes the expanded ability of the Observatory to serve in a new era.
