Calling All Actors. Island Theater is Holding Auditions for its Upcoming 10-Minute Play Festival

By Kevin Dwyer

Island Theatre will hold auditions for its 11th Annual Ten-Minute Play Festival on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th at the Grange, 10340 N. Madison Avenue NE, on Bainbridge Island. Auditions will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon on both days. (Actors need only audition once. They can pick your preferred day.)

bannerThe 10 short plays in the Festival will include roles for actors from high school age to senior citizens. Auditions are open to all interested actors. Actors must register ahead of time at www.islandtheatre.org.

“Actors selected for roles must be available during Festival production week in mid to late August and for rehearsals ahead of time which will be arranged by each play’s cast and director,” says Island Theatre spokeswoman Robin Simons. “Festival performances and production week rehearsals will be held on Bainbridge Island.”

No monologues are necessary for auditions, adds Simons. “Actors should come prepared to read short scenes from Festival plays. Sides will be provided ahead of auditions.”

If it’s impossible for an act for an actor to attend auditions on May 4th or 5th, a video audition may be arranged. However, in-person auditions are strongly preferred, Simons adds.

Doing Laundry
Actors perform a laundry scene from a previous play.

The Ten-Minute Play Festival is Island Theatre’s showcase of Kitsap County playwrights, actors, and directors. The ten plays chosen for this year’s Festival include dramas, comedies and dramedies, and have parts for up to 30 actors, in a wide range of roles.

The program of winning juried plays will be performed August 22-24, 2024 at the new Buxton Center For Performing Arts on Bainbridge, with performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.

Playwright Criteria For 2024 Included the Following

  • THEME.  HUNGER. Hunger can be literal, or figurative. Unmet or satisfied. Regardless, it powers our emotions and drives our actions. You may interpret HUNGER however you wish but the notion of HUNGER must be central to your play.
  • ENTRIES. Playwrights could submit up to three separate entries; however, only one entry per playwright were selected for the final program.
  • LENGTH. Plays must be no longer than 10 minutes; longer submissions were not considered.
  • STAGING. Set, lighting, sound, costume, prop and staging requirements MUST be MINIMAL.
  • CAST. Plays must have no fewer than two actors and no more than five actors.
  • SUBJECT MATTER. Content should be of interest to and suitable for high-school age and above audiences.

Simons says the 2024 11th annual Ten-Minute Play Festival is made possible by individual donations and donations through One Call for All.
