Celebrating 60 Years of Pickleball on Bainbridge Island. You Can Help Celebrate Tonight at the Founders Courts

This summer marks the 60th anniversary of Pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in the world – and it all started on a quiet beach on Bainbridge Island.

As legend has it, in the summer of 1965, a group of kids were bored at home on Pleasant Beach when their parents — Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum — told the kids to create a game using using what they had on hand: a badminton net, ping pong paddles, and a Whiffle ball.

While it was the kids who inspired the invention, it was the parents who made it famous. The three families spent months refining the rules to ensure the game was fun, simple, and inclusive — a sport designed for all ages and abilities.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

From those humble beginnings, Pickleball has grown into a global phenomenon. Nearly called “Pukaball” it spread from Bainbridge Island to Maui, HI, to The Villages in Florida, and now thrives in Singapore, Kenya, Chile, China, Mexico, the Netherlands, and even in Iceland. It’s a sport that builds community, nurtures social connection, strengthens bodies, and crosses every line of age, gender, and physical ability, including wheelchair and visually impaired play.

To commemorate this historic milestone, the Bainbridge Island community is celebrating the way Pickleball was meant to be celebrated – together. The event includes open community play on island-built courts, fun stories and, of course, cake. To be held Tonight, August 8, from 6 to 8 PM at the Founders Courts at Battle Point Park, 11299 Arrow Point Dr NE, Bainbridge Island, WA. All ages and abilities welcome.

Every community has the chance to celebrate any time this 60th birthday year! Celebrate your own way, and experience the natural fun as the game began, join or create a community that helped shape a worldwide movement.

Celebrating and honoring the spirit of the sport. Let’s celebrate 60 years of dinks, volleys, laughs, and connection. Pickleball is more than a game – it’s a global family with a small island heart.

Next weekend, the Founders Tournament will be held at the same venue – Aug. 13-17. Check it out.
