Cultural Corner: Art at the Library, October First Friday Art Walk, Island Theatre’s 10-Minute Playwriting Course!

Rider in the Rain by Michael Pontieri

As Linda Meier, art coordinator with the Bainbridge Island Public Library muses, “Autumn leaves falling by our windows, maybe the return of Northwest drizzle (but) always there is art.”

The library’s October artist, Michael Pontieri, hosts an opening reception to his solo exhibition titled “The Real-Life Paintings of a Reluctant Robot Trainer” this coming Friday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the library meeting room. The opening is part of the First Friday Art Walk, held in Downtown Winslow (see info below).

Here is the artist’s statement in Pontieri’s own words:
“Painting is dead. I must have heard that sometime in the ’80’s when I was in college, but being a painter, I must have ignored it, put it in the back of my head. It (painting) had died in the ’60’s or maybe the early ’70’s. It was replaced by shocking one-liners contained in an array of monofilament or sometimes an old dirty sock and later just by ideas uncontained by form.”
“I heard it again sometime in the last decade uttered online by a disgruntled painter loosely associated with another painter that I was loosely associated with, and I thought well, maybe that is so but I have a lot of canvas, paint, material for stretcher bars and frames, and even monofilament. There is also a certain momentum to it. Now there is a resurgence if not a resuscitation or resurrection of not exactly painting, yet of images of paintings that robots like, if that is the word, to mash up and recombine like a cyber truck running over a seven fingered toddler with shark teeth.”
You can view this exhibit during the month of October during regular library hours (except when a program is happening). A portion of sales is donated to the library.
