Cultural Corner: First Friday Art Walk, August 7th, Artist Jamie Brouwer Debuts at Library for August Exhibit

“The inspiration happened during a late afternoon trip to T & C. As the sun poured through the windows above the produce section, I was struck by the warmth of the light. Walking through the aisles, I watched skylights turn some product packages vibrant and saturated, while others looked grey and washed out. I snapped some sly photos on my phone, noticing how different the environments felt across Safeway, Costco, or other stores. Bright, corporate color hollers from the shelves, commanding our attention. It is a visual landscape integral to our daily experience, yet it often goes entirely unnoticed.”

“After visiting the French Impressionism “Farm to Table” exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum I was struck by these historical masters’ versions of their grocery stores. The galleries were full of dramatic, glowing scenes of fields, livestock, and still lives. Why should our contemporary commercial spaces be any less legitimate a subject?”

“This insight expanded my interest. What started as a purely visual investigation grew into deeper questions about how we procure food today. Our collective relationship with food is deeply tangled up in wellness culture, convenience, marketing, and equity issues.”

“Ultimately, this body of work operates on two levels. Formally, it is an exploration of color, light, and visual relationships within the mundane spaces of modern life. Conceptually, it is an invitation to examine our daily routines with intentionality. My hope is that after viewing the work, you will be inspired to look a little closer and find the unexpected beauty hidden in the everyday spaces around you.”
