First Friday Art Walk – July 2, 2021

Winslow Way and surrounding area, Downtown Bainbridge Island
First Friday of every month, 6-8 PM

Although the First Friday Art Walk will be a bit different than it was pre-pandemic, you can still enjoy an evening experiencing all that downtown Bainbridge has to offer. Many galleries, restaurants, shops and businesses will be participating this month showcasing the art of our talented creative community.

Enjoy a summer evening with a stroll through downtown visiting your favorite businesses and restaurants, shopping for gifts or items for yourself and your home. The walk begins on Winslow Way (near the ferry terminal) from 6pm to 8pm. *Please adhere to WA State Covid guidelines, as well as guidelines instituted by individual businesses.

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA), located 550 Winslow Way E. will open its summer exhibitions showcasing the works of Kurt Solmssen: The Yellow Boat, Nancy Callan & Katherine Gray: The Clown in Me Loves You, Trimpin: Hear & Now, and a new artist’s book exhibition called Every Day & Special Days. Note: opening day is Friday, July 2^nd, however the exhibitions are open daily from 10am-5pm and admission is free. Complete exhibition listings can be found at www.biartmuseum.org/exhibitions/.

Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty, located at 240 Winslow Way E. will be showcasing the artwork of Sandy Haight. Sandy is a watercolor artist, illustrator and teacher. In the last few years, Sandy has focused her watercolor art on the subject of flowers, which she calls Floralscapes.

Windermere Real Estate, located at 249 Winslow Way E., Ste. 400 will be showcasing the fine art photography of Dinah Satterwhite. Dinah uses a variety of techniques to infuse her photographs with color, blending motion and light in an artistic and surreal way.

Last month the Bainbridge Island First Friday Art Walk started up again, showcasing artists at Bainbridge Arts & Crafts (BAC) for their Island Ink – A Printmaking Exhibition, Bergh Images Fine Art Photography, and Millstream, who featured artist Chuck Gumpert. It was a wonderful and encouraging evening. I started my art walk at Madison and Winslow, working my way towards BIMA. The streets were filled with the energy of our community coming together once again to enjoy one of Bainbridge Island’s favorite monthly past times.

I spoke with Michael Goodnow, Executive Director of Bainbridge Island Downtown Association (BIDA), who coordinated the “post pandemic” First Friday Art Walk in June.

Michael took over as executive director in December 2020 when all the unknowns of the pandemic were still in full swing. Prior to joining BIDA, Michael spent 20 years in the US Navy before completing his Bachelors and Masters degrees. From there, he embarked on a career path that entailed management, marketing, community and corporate relations, organizational development, project director and executive director for both public entities and non-profits. He’s also served on many non-profit boards, including the Board of Directors of the Downtown Bremerton Association. In essence, Michael is no stranger to the needs of building a strong community for businesses, locals and visitors.

Aside from promoting our local downtown businesses, Michael hopes to connect people and businesses together in mutual support and collaboration to grow the community as a whole. He’s currently working on new promotional ideas and platforms, as well as a new branding campaign to enhance our downtown and create community engagement.

Fob Fridays – many local businesses downtown are participants in Fob Fridays (Bainbridge Island Senior/Community Center members receive 10% on Fridays with their BISCC fob).
