Once a month, Bainbridge Island Downtown Association and the City of Bainbridge Island present the First Friday Art Walk.

Spend an evening experiencing all that downtown Bainbridge has to offer, enjoy visiting participating galleries and businesses, have a glass of wine or other refreshments at various venues, and whet your appetite with small plates offered by participating restaurants. The walk begins on Winslow Way (near the ferry terminal) from 6pm to 8pm.

This month’s featured business is Kelly Johnston Art Studio & Gallery.

Having grown up in Seattle, Kelly has spent her life surrounded by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and draws her inspiration from the nature that surrounds us. She is especially taken with the interaction of light on the water and in the clouds and skies that surround Bainbridge Island and the San Juan archipelago.

Using water soluble oils and gouache, Kelly combines fluid brushstrokes and both bold and bright colors in her landscape-based paintings. Her abstract style represents the wondrous movement and depth of light on the water and the playful nature of the clouds in the skies. In addition to her water, sky and land series, Kelly has an abstract series full of cheerful color and extreme movement.

“My work combines bold color and loosely applied paint to emulate the poetic interaction of sunlight on the water’s surface as well as the abstract qualities of clouds and sky.”

Kelly received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Washington in 2000, and has worked in the interior design industry and created a line of handmade jewelry. Since returning to painting in 2013, Kelly’s work has been exhibited at the Bloedel Reserve, West Elm, Anthropologie and many other venues throughout the Pacific Northwest. Her paintings have received numerous awards and been featured in several magazines, including Luxe Interiors & Design, HGTV Magazine and Domino Magazine.

Kelly’s work is currently on exhibit at the Northwest Fine Arts Competition at The Phinney Center Gallery in Seattle, WA, where she is featured as the Jurors’ Choice Winner. Show dates: May 8 through June 15, 2019, for more information, click here.

Kelly lives on Bainbridge Island with her husband and two children and can often be found working away at her studio/gallery in downtown Bainbridge. Her pieces are available for purchase at her gallery and on her website. In addition, prints are available at Minted and McGaw Graphics. Commissioned pieces are also available, click here for details.
