This year’s Great Decisions at the Library series concludes with a discussion on the prospects for and challenges facing international cooperation on climate change. This coming Sunday’s event will be held at Bainbridge High School, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The 2015 Paris Agreement represents a historic act of global solidarity and a framework for collective accountability in addressing the climate crisis. Nearly 200 nations committed to curbing greenhouse gas emissions, bending the global emissions curve, and striving to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. While progress has been uneven and insufficient, the agreement underscores the power of collective action.

Since his inauguration this past January, however, President Trump’s actions and policies on climate change have included boosting domestic fossil fuel production, withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, and rolling back environmental regulations. He has also expressed skepticism about the severity of climate change and the need for action.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

What does it mean for the international effort to combat climate change when the world’s largest historical emitter steps away from the table?

Moderator: Jay Inslee. During his three terms as Washington State Governor, Inslee was a vocal advocate for climate action, championing initiatives such as the Climate Commitment Act and actively working to build a clean energy economy in the state. He also co-founded the U.S. Climate Alliance, a group of twenty-four states committed to meeting the Paris Agreement goals even when the U.S. has withdrawn from the treaty.

In November 2024, Inslee represented the U.S. Climate Alliance at COP29, where he emphasized the importance of subnational climate action and the durability of state-led initiatives in achieving net-zero emissions. In April, he was honored by Time Magazine as one of its 2025 Earth Heroes for his continuing contributions to environmental protection and climate action.

Great Decisions at the Library is sponsored by the Bainbridge Public Library with funding support from the Bainbridge Island Friends of the Library and the Bainbridge Community Foundation.
