ISLAND THEATRE PRESENTS 2 ACROSS “a warm and wise comedy” on January 20th and 21st

Island Theatre is excited to present a dramatic staged reading of 2 ACROSS: A Comedy of Crosswords and Romance by Jerry Mayer at the Bainbridge Public Library.

2 Across poster squareA man and woman board a San Francisco BART train at 4:30 a.m. They’re alone in the car and both are doing the New York Times crossword. She’s an organized, sensible psychologist. He’s a free-spirited, unemployed ad exec. She’s a crossword pro, he always quits. She wants to be left alone. He can’t stop talking. Opposites in an enclosed space, they argue and flirt, attacking each other’s values while gradually opening to the other’s point of view. Their trip is filled with surprises—for them and for the audience—and as the ride ends, it’s obvious that each of them has been changed.

“A charming lighthearted evening in the theater. . . a warm and wise comedy.” –

2 Across was written by Jerry Mayer, writer and producer of numerous TV sitcoms, including “The Facts of Life,” “Bewitched,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “Bridget Loves Bernie.” It ran off-Broadway at St. Luke’s Theater in 2015 followed by numerous runs in regional playhouses across the country.

The Island Theatre production is directed by Karen Hauser and features Autumn McMurray and Jeffrey Brown. It is recommended for high school age and up.

2 ACROSS will be staged in the Library’s community room on Saturday, January 20th at 7pm and Sunday, January 21st for a 3pm matinee. Admission is by a $5 minimum donation per person.

About Island Theatre

Island Theatre logo 2023The idea for Island Theatre came about in 1994 by Louise Mills and friend Michele McCrackin. Their first production, The Play’s the Thing by P.G. Wodehouse (adapted from a play by Ferenc Molnár) was performed in the Bainbridge High School auditorium. It was a huge success, and at a dinner for the cast and crew, held at the end of the successful show run, they decided to start a theatre company.

Island Theatre was born and named at a meeting later that year. The first board members were Mary Braden, Steve Buechler, Kate Carruthers, Michele McCrackin, Louise Mills, Steve Nicolet, and Cynthia Sears, with Steve Stolee serving as its first president. In 1995, Island Theatre became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and produced its first official play.

With some exceptions, Island Theatre productions are free to the community, with donations gratefully accepted. Since its inception, Island Theatre has presented close to 200 plays at the Bainbridge Public Library or on another stage, such as Bainbridge Performing Arts.

The Island Theatre provides high-quality theater in intimate settings for adults who like to think. Regular schedules include bi-monthly staged play readings at the Bainbridge Public Library; potluck play-readings in private homes at which guests are welcome to read a part, and the annual Island Theatre Ten-Minute Play Festival.

Run entirely by volunteers, Island Theatre is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization supported by donations, the Bainbridge Community Foundation, the City of Bainbridge Island Cultural Fund, the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, and One Call for All.
