It’s Back! The Manhattan Short Film Festival at BIMA this Coming Thursday thru Sunday. Tickets are going Fast!
Hear ye, hear ye, all Yee cinema lovers, theater goers, long-suffering worshipers of the Silver Screen, and maybe some wannabes out there, the Manhattan Short Film Festival is back for another year of fun-filled film watching and scoring.

Come and view 10 engrossing short films from around the world at the Film Festival – now in its 27th year – Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 25th, 26th, 27th, and 28th at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Showtimes are 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and 7 p.m. on Thursday.
“Many past shorts have been considered for Academy Awards,” says local Manhattan short organizer and self-described Movie Maven TJ Faddis. “Several have even won that coveted prize. But this isn’t entirely a passive viewing, as you will vote for your favorite short and actor.”
ADVERTISEMENTS:
“As anyone who has been to this event knows, this is one hot ticket,” Faddis adds, with the enthusiasm of a huge fan. “So be sure to get yours in advance here as matinees generally sell out. … “You can read more about this year’s selections and view the trailer here too.”
Tickets and details are available here: https://www.biartmuseum.org/
Tickets are $14 for BIMA members; $18 for those who are not yet members. All six showings feature the same 10 short films. The program is about 2-1/2 hours, including intermission and time to fill out your ballot.
A word to wise from Faddis, “If you are planning dinner after the matinee, don’t make reservations before 6:30 p.m..”
The MANHATTAN SHORT 2025 Finalists are:
Em & Selma Go Griffin Hunting — Alexander Thompson (USA)
Al Fresco — Ignacio Rodó (Spain)
Chasing the Party — Jessie Komitor (USA)
Paradise Man — Jordan Michael Blake (USA)
We Have Sinned Before You — Ifat Nener Orgad (Israel)
I Have My Reasons — Mikey Altoft (UK)
Ovary-Acting — Ida Melum (Norway)
Beyond Silence — Marnie Blok (Netherlands)
Zodiac — Hans Buyse (Belgium)
Passarinho — Natalia García Agraz (Mexico)
Here’s how the judging works: You will be given a brochure and voting card when you enter the theatre, so you can vote for your favorite actor and favorite film. “All 10 filmmakers will have their short reviewed by the Academy Award Committee with the possibility of having their film in the running for an Oscar in 2025,” Faddis says. “So you can vote for your favorite actor and favorite film.”
“You only get to vote for one favorite film,” she explains. “While there are always several films worthy, you have to wrestle with yourself as to which one will get your vote. We have many attendees who come for the matinee with friends, then head out to dinner together and spend the rest of the evening talking about how they voted and what they saw and experienced at the Manhattan Short(s).”
This year there are 10 Manhattan Short finalists hailing from eight countries. The final 10 represent the best short films from among all the entries received this year for consideration. In this year’s roughly 160-minute collection, expect suspense, surprise, laughter and gentle smiles as these films spin some heart-felt stories about human connection. There is something to admire about each of these selections.
All seven showings feature the same 10 short films. This year’s program is slightly under 3 hours, including intermission and time to fill out your ballot. “There is a 15-minute intermission with nibbles provided by the BIMA Bistro (with loving thank You’s to Stephanie). And you can always purchase beer/wine & other beverages to take into the auditorium to sip as you watch the show,” Faddis notes.
Adds Faddis, “Expect suspense and surprise and gentle smiles as these films spin some heart-felt stories about human connection. There is something to admire about each of these selections. … I love hosting (the) Manhattan Short(s), and have been doing it for 24 years. It’s better than Christmas…Everyone comes in with bright-eyed anticipation, knowing there are 10 gift-wrapped shorts waiting to unfold before (their) eyes. Will we gasp, laugh, cry, or stay silent as we process that last short? It’s a 2-1/2-hour emotional roller coaster of human connection – and I can’t wait to share it with this year’s audiences!”
