Join the Parks Foundation for Charles Schmid Waterfront Trail Dedication, July 7
The Parks Foundation and the City of Bainbridge Island will dedicate the Waterfront Trail at Waterfront Park to the memory of Charles E. Schmid, a years-long Bainbridge environmentalist and trail advocate. The ceremony will take place at the park, beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday July 7.
Schmid, who was involved in the formation of Association of Bainbridge Communities (ABC), known for its environmental policies and advocacy, died last April at the age of 81. Born on October 30, 1940, to Edson and Agatha Schmid of East Williston, NY, Schmid graduated from Cornell University, earned a Master’s in Engineering from University of Connecticut and went on to receive a PhD in Acoustics at the University of Washington.
He and his family moved to Bainbridge Island in 1970. From 1990-2013 he was the Executive Director of the Acoustical Society of America. Schmid was a dedicated environmentalist and mountain climber. He was awarded the 2020 Washington Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for Environmentalism for his decades of service, from starting the first Bainbridge Island recycling center to helping to establish Home Rule, Pritchard Park and the Waterfront Trail.
From his obituary: “We know that Charles’ spirit lives on in all those who have been lucky enough to call him friend or family, and that his commitment to the environment has left a lasting, positive impact on the world.”
