Learn How to Find Hidden Clues in Photos at a Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society Lecture Friday; Wing Point Pro Austin Hurt Playing in PGA Championship

What’s in a photo? More than you think. Often overlooked details in historic photos can provide important clues to a family’s historical background, such as when and where a photo was taken; social standing or occupation; fraternal organization and memberships; or a recent death in the family.
Join the Bainbridge Island Genealogy Society (BIGS) and learn how to find hidden clues that may be lurking in your historic family photos! The presentation, featuring Bainbridge author, artist and lecturer Susan Strawn, is free and open to the public. It takes place on Friday May 15 at 10 a.m. at the Bainbridge Island Library.
Strawn will present the topic, “Hidden Clues in Historic Family Photographs”. She is a professor emerita at Dominican University, and is a speaker known for her expertise in historical/cultural textiles and fashions. What you are likely to learn:
ADVERTISEMENTS:
• Historic photographs are very different from the photos we casually take and carry around in our cellphones today. In former times, portraits and family photographs were very important events. They were occasions carefully planned for, often requiring a trip to a local professional photographer, who would “make” the photograph. “Looking their best” was important because the goal was to create an enduring and favorable record of a life. Many of us have inherited historic photographs. Sometimes we know a great deal about the subjects in those photos, but often we know very little. Hidden clues can help us learn more.
• Such hidden clues in historic photographs come in a variety of forms. They could be hiding in the very clothing worn or even the way subjects combed their hair. Fashion communicates when you know what to look for! Often overlooked details in historic photographs can provide important clues such as when or where a photo was taken; a person’s social standing or occupation; fraternal organization memberships; or even if there was a recent death in the family.
• Family History is just what is being preserved in historic photographs. And deciphering clues is what we do to learn about our forebearers whether in photos or other parts of their paper trail. BIGS is a 100% volunteer non-profit organization whose members have been researching their family history all over the world for the past 20+ years from our location on Bainbridge Island. If you have inherited historic family photographs and you’d like to know more about the people in those photos, help is on the way. It is possible to learn important information about those people from the clothing they wore or even the way they combed their hair. That’s because fashion communicates! At least it can when you know what to look for.

Wing Point Pro Golfer Austin Hurts Hits the Bigtime Tomorrow at the PGA Championship

Austin Hurt, the head golf professional at Wing Point Golf & Country Club on Bainbridge, has qualified for the 2026 PGA Championship after securing a Top-20 finish at the PGA Professional Championship April 29 at Bandon Dunes Golf in Oregon.
He finished the tournament at one under par, which tied for fourth place. Hurt was at the top of the leaderboard through three rounds but shot a 74 in the final round as the wind conditions made scoring tough.
It marks the second time Hurt has qualified for the PGA Championship, the first time coming in 2022, when he missed the cut. This year’s PGA Championship is May 14-17 at Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia.
Hurt was born and raised a Bainbridge. He attended Bainbridge High School and excelled in golf where he earned and athletic scholarship to play golf at Washington State University. Among his amateur accomplishments, Hurt won the prestigious Washington State Amateur Championship at Palouse Ridge and qualified for the US Amateur in 2011 at Erin Hills Country Club.
He joined Wing Point’s Golf Staff in 2014 and is a Class A member of the PGA of America. Hurt most recently qualified to play in the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in 2022 & currently holds the title for 2023 Pacific Northwest Section Champion. When he’s not golfing, he enjoys spending time with his wife Christina, daughter Haisley and his “dog daughter” Kokanee.
