Not to be Missed: The Chance to Bike and Eat at this Coming Sunday’s Annual Bike for Pie Event Presented by Squeaky Wheels!

Let’s face it, the thought of eating pie and bicycling seem like contradictory activities, Capiche? But not if you’re a member of Squeaky Wheels, the Bainbridge Island Bicycle Advocates, which will be hosting its annual Bike for Pie this coming Sunday, Aug. 30.

The event is designed for the whole family to enjoy a casual ride around the island, and, of course, eat pie at the end of the day. Registration runs from approximately 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. at the Bainbridge Island Town Square, where the Farmers’ Market takes place next to City Hall. The official ride begins at 9 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m. For those of you that sign up between today and the day of, Squeaky Wheels will do its best to provide any key info on its Facebook Page.

Squeaky Wheels is a non- profit, 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to advocating and supporting actions that encourage more people to ride bikes on and near Bainbridge Island. Bike for Pie is the main fundraiser for the organization and proceeds are used to fund volunteer activities and other actions that promote safer bike facilities, awareness, youth education and advocacy.

The ride – sponsored by Eleven Winery and other organizations such as Lorna Jean Giger of Windermere, the BARN and Bainbridge Bike Co. – is a fun romp over the island’s many hilly roads and byways, with scenic views of Seattle, beautiful Bainbridge homes and forests, and vistas of the Puget Sound, Washington State ferries, the surrounding Olympics and, if one is lucky, the visage of Mount Rainier. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a pod of Orcas or maybe a seal or two. Some of the ride follows the familiar Chilly Hilly course.

A few years back, a buddy and I gorged ourselves on leftover homemade pie that was still available at the finish line. With a dollop of Vanilla ice cream, it was a treat, or treats, that still sits well in my stomach’s memory bank. Yummie!

As in year’s past, the folks at Squeaky Wheels have organized two rides to try and accommodate more riders. Each ride has a different course length and registration cost. There will be music by Ranger and the Re-Arrangers Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers at Town Square at the end of the ride.

Interested in volunteering. Squeaky Wheels needs help serving pie, assisting people with check-in and selecting their sweet new bike jersey. The staff may still be looking for two volunteers to assist in bike route marking. Info: Volunteer-B4P — Squeaky Wheels

Registration: 9:00 am – 11:00 am. Cost: $20-$100, depending on how many riders. Bike For Pie

Who: This is an event for the whole family.

Where: Bainbridge Island Town Square (Farmers’ Market between Bainbridge Performing Arts and City Hall Buildings). The ride is self-support. However, both routes pass through neighborhood centers where riders can find restrooms or water.
