On Thursday, Indivisible Bainbridge Island and Other Groups Holding Events Commemorating Former Congressman John Lewis’ Good Trouble Approach

Indivisible Bainbridge Island is holding two events on Thursday July 17 commemorating John Lewis Day. The events are part of a national call to action “Good Trouble Lives On”

John Lewis (1940-2020) was a major figure in the Civil Rights Movement. He famously participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965.  One of those marches ended with him being clubbed by police. He helped organize the March on Washington in 1963 where Rev. Martin Luther King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.  He served as U.S. Congressman from Georgia from 1987 to his death on July 17, 2020.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

He coined the iconic phrase “Good Trouble” to inspire others to activism and resistance to injustice. In his honor Indivisible Bainbridge Island is sponsoring two John Lewis Day events on tomorrow, July 17, the fifth anniversary of his passing.

Since one of Lewis’ biggest concerns was strengthening community, the activist group is putting on a Food Drive to support the food bank at Helpline House on Bainbridge Island.  Helpline is a major social service center for Bainbridge.  As well as a food bank, it supplies counseling and social work services free of charge.  In 2024, 1854 people (about 1 of every 13 Bainbridge residents) in 851 households used the Helpline food bank. They distributed 972,835 pounds of food!  Read about Helpline House: One of the Island’s Most Cherished Nonprofits – Helpline House – is in the Midst of Raising Millions to Expand its Operations | THE ISLAND WANDERER

The first John Lewis Day event is a Food Drive collection at the south parking lot of Eagle Harbor Church at 105 Winslow Way.  Indivisible will collect food from 9am to 2pm.  Especially needed are canned soup and chili, sugar and honey, baking mixes, condiments, peanut butter, jam and jelly, and bar soap.  Donations of gift cards from Safeway and T&C Market are welcome, as well as cash donations to Helpline directly.  The federal budget passed last week will be reducing federal support for food security in many ways and will necessitate increased community help for Helpline House on an ongoing basis.

The day’s second event is a Good Trouble demonstration from 5 to 6:30pm on the Sound to Olympic path next to 305 from Winslow Way to High School Road. “Our goal is to Fill The Path,” says spokesman Stephen Hubbard. Participants can enter from either end; parking is better on the north end by High School Road.  The path is accessible for people with disabilities, Hubbard said. There will be line dancing!  “Bring your signs and show your feelings about the dumpster fire that is the Trump administration.,” Hubbard adds.

“We are fighting against autocracy, corruption and cruelty to the poor, LBGTQ people, immigrants, women…. And for compassion, community, good healthcare, education, (and) affordable housing, (and) for a nation that represents our ‘better angels’ on the world stage,”Hubbard further notes.

We look forward to seeing you at one or both of these events!
