The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum and Winslow Art Center proudly present: Paint Out Winslow 2019 – A Plein Air Event – September 6th through September 8th
Experience the art of painting outdoors!
En Plein air (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ plɛn ɛːʁ]), is a style of painting, primarily established in France in the mid-19th century, when artists began painting outdoors, especially during daylight hours. This technique differs from indoor studio painting in that it allows an artist to capture the scene or subject as it unfolds through natural light and the quality of an open-air atmosphere, as opposed to a still-life subject which is usually arranged in advance.
The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum is proud to partner with the Winslow Art Center for this year’s Plein Air Festival & Competition. This year’s competition focuses on the historical aspect of Bainbridge Island and takes place Friday, September 6th through Sunday, September 8th. Throughout the weekend, more than twenty-five artists, using a variety of mediums such as oils, watercolor, acrylics, and pastels, will be on location in downtown Winslow and Lynwood Center, and are encouraged to capture and paint the historic atmosphere that is still prevalent today.
The BIHM will have docents available at Pegasus, the First Congregational Church, Amelia Wynn Winery, and their Island Center Schoolhouse to offer information about the historical scenes that the participants will be painting.
The artists’ work will be on exhibit and available for purchase at the Winslow Art Center Studio & Gallery for the course of the event—a portion of the sales will benefit the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum.
Additional scheduled events will include:
Friday, September 6th: Exclusive Plein Air Washington Artists (PAWA) members day, 8am to 9pm; and a reception for the First Friday Art Walk at the Winslow Art Center, which will include special guests of the PAWA, an opportunity to meet the artists, refreshments and event paintings available for purchase from 6pm – 8pm
Saturday, September 7th: Demos by Guest Artists Lois Griffel, Sunny Apinchapong, Dianna Shyne, Yong Hong Zhong, Darrell Anderson and Fred Truitt from 10am to 1pm; and a reception, art exhibit, and sale at Winslow Art Center, as well as a no-host bar featuring Amelia Wynn wine (beverage tickets available) from 6pm to 8pm
