Turning your passion into a business – Sarah Duncan on Organization Overdrive

Organization Overdrive logoFor many of us, getting and staying organized is a huge challenge. Life tends to get in the way and before we know it, piles of clutter are everywhere and the task of getting it all where it belongs (or doesn’t belong) can be overwhelming. That’s where Sarah Duncan and her new business, Organization Overdrive, comes in.

Sarah grew up (for the most part) in Dallas, TX, where she met her husband, Alex and they eventually adopted their son, Ethan. Although life in the Lone-Star state was great, the heat was not. Sarah and her family longed for life in cooler climes, but also wanted the adventure of living in the Pacific Northwest, and when they discovered Bainbridge Island, they knew they’d found the perfect place — great schools for their son, a lively tech industry for her husband and a wonderful environment for all of them. They made the move in 2018, when Ethan was just two years old.

As a full-time stay-at-home mom, nothing means more to Sarah than her role as a mother and wife, however, once Ethan started school, she realized she now had time to do something for herself. Along with volunteer work at Helpline House, Sarah also decided to create her own business, and in February of 2023 Organization Overdrive was born.

Sarah Duncan - Owner of Organization OverdriveSarah is an organizational guru, “something about sorting through items, clearing out the clutter and refreshing a space, gives me life. It fuels my soul! The satisfaction I get from the simple act of sorting my junk drawer is like no other,” she says on her website. While she often helped friends and family get organized, it occurred to her that she could broaden her horizons and share her knowledge and expertise with others. She spent months researching the field of home/business organization, as well as combining her own learned experiences to develop her business plan. However, she noted, things kept evolving as she went along; each new client brought forth new challenges and needs, which Sarah uses to learn from and adapt her services so that her client’s final product is specifically tailored.

“My goal is to help you create a space that works for you, not against you. Whether you’re looking to create more space, increase efficiency, or simply declutter and simplify your life, I will work with you to understand your own goals and preferences, and create a customized plan that fits your unique needs and lifestyle.”

Sarah’s services have a wide range, and include:

Organization Overdrive before-after playroomHome Organization – This process can include decluttering closets, clothing storage, kitchens, home offices, garages, and maximizing and implementing smart storage solutions. Through this process, she can assist you in prioritizing your possessions and redesigning your spaces to gain maximum functionality.

The projects don’t need to be big either, she can help you organize your holiday décor to make it more accessible and useable, or simply give you a short consult to help you get on your way to organizing your belongings on your own. She also assists in recommending the right furniture to suit your storage needs (she can assemble most pieces for you), and she will package up your items that are going to charity shops or to the dump.

Sarah’s customers also vary in participation, while some want her to do it all, others like to be part of the process. In one instance, Sarah shared that she had a client who’d become immobile. The client sat comfortably in a chair while Sarah cleaned out the clutter and consulted her on what was to be kept, and what was to be discarded.

Organization Overdrive before-after kitchensMoving Assistance – As we all know, packing everything up for a move can be a daunting task, especially if you’ve lived somewhere for a long time. Sarah provides support and assistance in getting your items sorted so that you only move what you want to keep. She can also help with packing and/or unpacking, and/or organizing your new space.

Life Transitions – Life can be full of expected and unexpected twists and turns, and sometimes we just need help navigating them. Whether it be the birth of a child or the transition from a younger child’s décor to that of a pre-teen, going from a full house to an empty nest, or the death of a loved one, Sarah can assist you in making the transition.

“My goal is to provide compassionate support during these transitions, recognizing that each individual has their own unique needs and preferences. With my assistance, you can feel confident and empowered as you navigate these changes, knowing that you have someone by your side to help you every step of the way.”

Sarah doesn’t limit her services to home spaces either, she’s available to consult and organize on business solutions to maximize your office/business spaces to allow you to maximize your productivity in a comfortable and organized environment. She will also provide instruction on an individual basis so that you can not only organize your space yourself, but learn how to keep it organized going forward.

Some of her larger projects include the complete overhaul of a playroom into a comfortable space that a family of all ages can enjoy. While the client already had a Pinterest board to guide Sarah in colors and furniture styles, Sarah was able to help them sort through all the toys that were no longer used, the clutter that had accumulated, and provide practical and attractive storage for the growing family. On the smaller scale, she worked with a pre-teen client to learn what his needs and wants were for his bedroom, providing him with a plan he could easily implement himself.

For Sarah, starting her own business wasn’t something she ever thought she could do, but with the help of an incredible support group, she overcame those fears. “I’m actually doing it! I’m doing something I am passionate about and truly love and I’m helping people and making a genuine difference in their lives. That feels great!”

BICoC - TIWBSarah’s services are available in both Kitsap and King County, and the process begins with filling out her consultation request form (you can find that by clicking here). During the consultation, you will discuss your goals, preferences, and budget and she’ll create a customized plan to fit your needs and lifestyle.
