This February, twelve Puget Sound artists working with paint, clay, glass, ink, wire, fiber, and photography show their skill in utilizing low contrast, high contrast, and tonal grays to create impact, mystery, mood and beauty.

BAC’s February exhibition features art by Theresa Choi, Mikey Cozza, Leah Gerrard, Gary Groves, Larry Halvorsen, Sandee Johnson, Dorothy McGuinness, Linda Okazaki, Steve Stolee, Christie Tirado, Jeanne Toal and Kay Walsh. Bainbridge Ultra Endurance Running Event Takes Place on Saturday, View it at Battle Point Park

The Bainbridge Ultra Running Team (BURT) captures the rugged and peculiar spirit of traditional trail running through its annual BURT 100, an endurance event held every February on the winding trail networks of Bainbridge Island.

Founded by locals Chris Heiden and Mark Goodro, the race is designed to challenge participants with a 55-kilometer loop that links iconic trails like the Grand Forest, Gazzam Lake, and Fort Ward. Participants will take part in 1, 2, or 3 loops (55k, 110k, and 100ish miles respectively).

“Beyond the physical test of navigating muddy, freezing terrain in the dark, the BURT 100 also has a greater community purpose: 100% of registration net proceeds go directly to the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation, helping to fund the very trail connections that make this sneaky hard island adventure possible,” says Brian Harmon, one of the event’s organizers. “Over the years, the BURT 100 continues to grow. This year, BURT expects to field 65 participants, with another 20+ on the wait list.”

The BURT 100 relies on community support to be successful, Harmon says.  Aid station volunteers support runners by keeping stations stocked and passing out food, water, and electrolytes.

If you’re interested in viewing the race, the start/finish is at the Battle Point Picnic Shelter. The race begins Feb 7 at 8:00 am. 55k finishers are expected to begin finishing around 12:30-1:00, with the bulk of finishers coming through around 3 pm. 100 milers are expected to begin finishing around Feb 8 at 8:00am and the race will finish at 3 p.m.

During this time you may see temporary signs and flagging to help keep racers on course.  If you’re interested in joining runners for their weekly Wednesday night run or are interested in volunteering to support racers in future years please contact BURT at bainbridgeultra@gmail.com. If you’re interested in running in future years, the sign up will be posted here next Fall: https://ultrasignup.com.
