BAINBRIDGE ISLAND 2023 SUMMER STUDIO TOUR – August 11 – 13
The 23rd Annual Summer Studio Tour on Bainbridge Island takes place August 11th through 13th. Forty-three artists will be on hand showcasing their work in five local artists’ studios with original, hand-crafted art.
Each artist has been juried, ensuring that the artwork is high quality and original, reflecting the “hand and spirit of the artist.” Each artist will also be present at their designated studio, so visitors can really get to know the them and learn about their techniques, style, and inspiration. Plus, many artists offer custom work, sizes, and themes.
Look for a wide variety of work on display, including garden art, watercolors, jewelry, pottery, acrylics, fused glass, wearables, metal sculpture, India ink, mixed media, photography, encaustics and more.
Tour Manager Dinah Satterwhite says, “We have a new studio this year. Sophie Frieda’s beautiful home and garden, which will be full of wonderful artists. And many new artists with amazing work. We’re all so excited to share and see our regular friends and meet new ones at the Summer Tour!”
One of the new artists is Ingrid Amirault. She is an oil painter with influences from the natural environment. She says, “having grown up in the Northern Yukon territories, nature influenced every aspect of living. The Wild was in every breath so capturing this artistically seemed natural to me!” Her work plays with light and shadow, dappled light through trees, and just has a moody energy that is captivating.
Another new artist, Robert Brownlee, will be showcasing his jewelry, featuring semi-precious stones. Working with fine silver and old-world techniques of bezel rolling, there are no adhesive or glues. Clean and simple. “My passion for the beauty I find in these semi-precious stones is my inspiration, the stones sort of dictate the style of the setting with the patterns and colors they display.”
Some of the other new artists include: Lisa Sweo Eul, acrylics, mixed-media, and encaustics; Maya Leites, acrylic, charcoal, ink; and Melisa Malvin, acrylics and mixed media. Returning after a few years off, is Tiffany Noel Thiele with her exquisite glass platters and new jewelry. Thiele’s work is well-known for incorporating subtle textures in her pieces, and intense attention to detail. “My pieces are carefully crafted to represent the beauty of this island. Just like the water that surrounds us, glass has the ability to reflect and refract light. It is one of the reasons why it endlessly fascinates me and motivates me to learn and grow as an artist.”
Another returning artist, long-time islander Andrew (“Andy”) Bergh, who along with his wife Carol recently closed their Winslow gallery (Bergh Images) to enjoy more independence of time, is returning to the studio tour after a five-year hiatus. Andy’s evocative images feature an eclectic mix of genres (e.g., landscape, cityscape, travel and black-and-white) in an impressive assortment of mediums (e.g., canvas, acrylic, metal, and matted prints). Bergh Images (at Barbara Weissman’s studio) is a must-see for those who enjoy stunning photography.
The five studios on the Tour are:
- Theresa Killgore’s “Peaceful Spring Designs Studio” next to Lynwood Center;
- Elemental Furnishings on Vincent Road by the recycle center, owned by Kathy Lafond and George Brooks;
- Danna Watson’s “Dancing Spirit Studio” on Fletcher Bay Road;
- Barbara Weissman’s studio close to Rolling Bay just off of Valley Road; and
- Sophie Frieda’s Studio, just off Valley Road on Hyla before the Rolling Bay shops.
The Studio Tour is a free self-guided tour, where patrons can get original hand-crafted art directly from the artist. The studios are open 10am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.
