Chief Seattle Days Celebrates Suquamish Tribal Culture This Weekend; Free Music at BPA and the Green, Chick-fil-a Opens in Bremerton

Chief Seattle Days is an annual celebration that the Suquamish Tribe presents to honor the historic accomplishments of Chief Seattle. The festival run from Friday August 14-Sunday August 16 in Suquamish, right across the bridge from Bainbridge Island.

There are a whole host of events taking place throughout the weekend. Some are ones that the Suquamish community thought would be fun and entertaining, while others are focused on the revitalization of Coastal Salish traditions and culture. The festival is open to the public which is invited to experience the Suquamish Tribe’s hospitality, culture and fun.

From honoring ceremonies to athletic tournaments, Chief Seattle Days offers a variety of activities that attempt to capture the essence of Coastal Salish Culture. For example, participate in the solemn and deeply meaningful Gravesite Honoring ceremony, a cherished tradition in which Tribe members pay their respects to ancestry and preserve the spiritual connection with the Tribe’s heritage.

The weekend also features a wide variety of tournaments including golf, a 5k run, canoe racing, softball, and cornhole, just to name a few. Another special event is the Pow Wow & Coastal Jam. The latter is a special gathering where the traditions of coastal communities are shared and celebrated.  The public can further embrace the spirit of Chief Seattle Days with the event’s signature Salmon Bake, a beloved tradition where succulent salmon is cooked to perfection, bringing the community together in a celebration of culture and cuisine.

Free Concert on the Lawn at BPA Tonight, Friday August 14 Featuring Ranger & the Re-Arrangers

Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” with Gabe Hall-Rodrigues from 6-8pm Friday, August 14th.The Lawn at BPA will be filled with the sounds of swing when Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” host a concert featuring Gabe Hall-Rodrigues on accordion! Bring your blanket or chair, and a picnic dinner. There’s also a paved area with room for dancing

Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Romani campsite with their version of Hot Club Swing. Hall-Rodrigues is an incredible player–in 2010 he won the American Accordionists’ Virtuoso Solo Competition!

The concert is free to attend, and the band will gratefully accept donations.

Just down the street at the Winslow Green, also tonight, long-time island dentist and singer/guitarist Mark Soltys will be performing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There are two more acts scheduled to perform to round out the summer series: 8/21 Watmough Daze 8/28 Honey Moon

Chick-fil-a Opens Its first location in Kitsap County in Bremerton 

Chick-fil-a the iconic southern-based chicken fast food joint opened its first Kitsap County location earlier this week in Bremerton. The store is located at 1583 NE Fuson Rd, Bremerton, WA.
