Like Biking and Eating? Try out this coming Sunday’s Annual Bike for Pie Event

2023 Bike for Pie logo imageOk, let’s face it, the thought of eating pie and bicycling seem like contradictory activities, Capiche? But not if you’re a member of Squeaky Wheels, the Bainbridge Island Bicycle Advocates, which will be hosting its annual Bike for Pie this coming Sunday, Aug. 27.

The event is designed for the whole family to enjoy a casual ride around the island, and, of course, eat pie at various stops. Registration runs from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Bainbridge Island Town Square, where the Farmers’ Market takes place next to City Hall. The official ride begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m.

Squeaky Wheels is a non- profit, 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to advocating and supporting actions that encourage more people to ride bikes on and near Bainbridge Island. Bike for Pie is the main fundraiser for Squeaky Wheels and proceeds are used to fund volunteer activities and other actions that promote safer bike facilities, awareness, youth education and advocacy.

The ride – sponsored by Eleven Winery and other organizations – is a fun romp over the island’s many hilly roads and byways, with scenic views of Seattle, beautiful Bainbridge homes and forests, and vistas of the Puget Sound, Washington State ferries, the surrounding Olympics and, if one is lucky, the visage of Mount Rainier. Some of the ride follows the familiar Chilly Hilly course.

A few years back, a buddy and myself gorged ourselves on leftover homemade pie that was still available at the finish line. With a dollop of Vanilla ice cream, it was a treat, or treats, that still sits well in my stomach’s memory bank.

This year, the folks at Squeaky Wheels have organized four rides to try and accommodate more riders. Each ride has a different course length and registration cost. (See maps below). There will be music at Town Square at the end of the ride.
